Go back to a point when you were happy - really happy, it might have been when you were 5 or 6 years old and you spent the best afternoon of your life playing with your friends, laughing, running around and even having disagreements that lasted maybe only a few minutes.
Why was everything at that point in your life so easy? You were up and down and you didn’t care. Everything went away as fast as it appeared. You lived from moment to moment enjoying the small things. Maybe your parents bought you a cone of ice-cream or you were waiting at home for your mum after school and you were over the moon when you saw her. Remember when you were so excited to tell her about your day! Or only so excited for a hug – that made you feel so special! What about that time she was making cookies and you were trying to help her and she let you even though you made the process more complicated. You were excited to try new things...
How excited were you when you learned to write your name right for the first time? When you finally got your first pet – dog, cat, guineapig or turtle..
So what happened to you along the way? Did you forget to live and enjoy every little thing that turned up in the moment? Where has that curiosity of yours gone to? Who has taken it away from you? Well, it’s probably still there somewhere hiding in the corner of your being, withered and battered, pale and depressed.. So why don’t you save its life. Take it out of that sticky damn hole and show it the light of day again. That little spark can still turn into fire of passion and excitement. The only thing you have to do is remember, go back to that time you understood life, when ever it was and start from there all over again.
What was it that made your heart beat faster? Riding your bike around the neighbourhood, playing with your dog, reading science-fiction, watching stars at night? Or was it that boat trip with your mum or dad years ago, or just your dreams..?
It’s time to start dreaming again. It’s time to find new and exciting things for you and I mean FOR YOUR SELF. This is about what makes you happy, not others. But first try to find happiness in everything you are doing. Try to see and live your life through child eyes!
You have a choice with every moment of your life! You can have fun or you can be miserable. When you get up, when you get ready for the day, when you go to work, when you work, when you have a lunch break... in every moment you can feel good. When was the last time you got up in the morning and wondered what the day would bring you? When was the last time you enjoyed eating your breakfast! Actually taste it. The flavours and smells can trigger emotions and emotions are the key to your happiness. Emotions are what make your life sparkle with excitement. They are not there to make you feel like crap or get angry. So now it’s the time to reclaim your happiness and get back to all that you left behind and considered as not important. If you always liked to spend time in nature, why don’t you try to leave the office earlier and instead of going straight home, go to the beach and just sit there for a moment or pack up and go for a day in the mountains and do a bit of hiking.
I for example always loved to watch night sky – there is so much up there you can think of, looking up soothes your mind and at the same time it brings thoughts to your consciousness you would never considered while worrying about the usual problems. I was able to spend hours looking for ideas! It was more of a spiritual practice and the questions that come up range from usual: how small and insignificant are we? To more profound inner shifts that might change your life: stillness of the night and space might seep into your consciousness and make you more humble, quiet and respectful.
Find your own happiness either in eating fresh fruit and appreciating that you can actually buy it and taste it or in watching the sunset and being grateful for your eyes. Believe me, not every one is so blessed...
If you change your perspective everything can provoke a great deal of happiness.
A homeless person, would be over the moon if you gave him a bag of fresh strawberries and you might even throw it in the garbage after the berries go off in your fridge...
Our problem is that we take everything for granted. Our education, food, living standards like electricity and drinking water, even entertainment is delivered without any effort; TV and the Internet is part of almost every household in the economically developed countries. The ever increasing technology and standard of life is slowly removing smiles from our faces. It’s only after we break away from being dependant on everything that “should” make us happy is when we rediscover our long time lost happiness. We do not have to give up technology that makes our life easier, but might consider being slaves to the media and try to impress everybody around by trying to fit. The only person you need to impress is you...
It’s that simple. If you want to experience happiness you have to find it in what you already have around you.
